Picasso, the Foreigner: An Exhibition Exploring the Artist’s Immigrant Identity
27 February  – 29 June 2025

Conceived by Annie Cohen-Solal, this exhibition delves into Picasso’s identity as an immigrant in France, where, despite worldwide fame, he never obtained citizenship. The exhibition intertwines aesthetics and politics to illustrate how Picasso, living as a “foreigner,” revolutionized 20th-century art.

The exhibition Picasso, the Foreigner, organized by Fondazione Roma in collaboration with Marsilio Arte, will be held at Palazzo Cipolla from February 27, 2025.

Thanks to the partnership with the Musée national Picasso-Paris—its main lender—along with Palais de la Porte Dorée, Museu Picasso Barcelona, Musée Picasso in Antibes, Musée Magnelli – Musée de la Céramique in Vallauris, and prestigious European private collections, the exhibition will feature over 100 works by the artist. It will also showcase documents, photographs, letters, and videos. This third Italian stop—after Palazzo Reale in Milan and Palazzo Te in Mantua—will present an exclusive selection of previously unseen works, handpicked by the curator specifically for Palazzo Cipolla’s exhibition layout.

The project was originally conceived by Annie Cohen-Solal, who curated the exhibition with contributions from Johan Popelard of the Musée National Picasso-Paris.

A significant section will be dedicated to Picasso’s Roman spring of 1917, spent in the company of Jean Cocteau, Erik Satie, Sergei Diaghilev, and Leonid Massine.

“Picasso’s Roman spring in 1917 remains a historic moment of artistic rebirth for the ‘foreigner’ artist, following the French government’s confiscation of his Cubist works in December 1914,” remarks Annie Cohen-Solal, curator and author of Picasso: A Life as a Foreigner (Prix Femina Essai, 2021), already translated into ten languages and published in Italy by Marsilio Editori.

Born in 1881 in Málaga, Spain, Pablo Picasso settled permanently in Paris in 1904. Although France would be his home until his death and his fame would transcend borders, he was never granted French citizenship. The exhibition traces Picasso’s aesthetic and political trajectory, illustrating how he shaped his identity while living under the complex status of an immigrant.

Through this journey, visitors will gain a deeper understanding of how this master of 20th-century art, a foreigner in France, asserted his presence and imposed his revolutionary aesthetics.
